Earth Day was… yesterday?
As a kid growing up through the 80’s and 90’s, I remember Earth Day being a pretty big deal. I don’t know why, exactly. Maybe it’s because I was in school and things like that were a part of the curriculum. Or teachers looking for something to fill their day, possibly. Hard to say. Or maybe it’s because there was a larger focus on the day because, although not “new” even back then, the outdoor recreation movement of the 90’s put more of a cultural significance on the day.
Even in popular culture it was a bigger deal. Back then you had Bono and Sting and the pop icons of the day bringing up things like Amazon rainforest awareness and such. I don’t think I’ve heard Sabrina Carpenter or Benson Boone talking much about the environment.
But then again, I’m busy with things like work and whether or not I need a new roof on my house.
Regardless, as a nature lover/outdoor junkie and child of the 90’s, Earth Day holds a special place in my heart. I guess I need to make more of a purposeful effort not only to remember the date, but maybe get out there and pick up some trash or plant a few things.
